Diving Pemuteran

Please note that due to its distance from Sanur, we do not offer day trips here. For diving Pemuteran please book this amazing experience via our Scuba Diving Package or include it in one of our popular Bali Diving Safaris.

Scuba Diving in Pemuteran is beautiful. The island group survived an extreme El Nino in 1998, affecting most of the coral reef above 6m depth. Today, thanks to the active conservation of the reef, it’s a diver’s dream. The diversity of the reef attracted an astounding number of marine life. Most diving sites in Pemuteran have clean and warm waters, limited to no current, and magnificent corals. It is ideally suited for beginner and advanced divers, underwater photographers, night divers, and snorkelers. Most of the dive sites are coral slopes going down to 25 m deep.

Marine Life at the Dive Site

Diving Pemuteran offers a huge diversity of fish and coral combined. Most of the dives are sloping coral reef dives with a typical maximum depth of 25m. As mentioned earlier El Nino destroyed a lot of the corals closer to the surface some 20 years ago. However, soon after this happened, a recovery project was launched. The project included sinking large artificial structures with samples of coral attached to the reef. It’s amazing to see the project’s impact and how remarkably the coral has recovered within only two decades.

Around Pemuteran marine life comes in all sizes from small nudibranchs and flatworms to large barracudas and tuna, and somewhere in the middle, squid, and cuttlefish. And if you are very lucky, you might even spot a Manta Ray.

Deep Middle Reef - Diving Pemuteran

The deep middle reef is the only wall-like dive in Pemuteran. It takes 5 minutes by boat ride to reach it. Recovering from the ’90s, the reef offers now beautiful sea fans and coral tables between 15 and 40m depth. In the shallow, there are colorful coral gardens where you can find a lot of unusual and weird creatures. This is a good site for night diving.

Temple Garden - Taman Pura

This mysterious location consists of a small temple complex, built in the 90’s with the help of the local dive centers. Starting at 30m it works its way back to Temple Wall. You will find various large stone statues such as a Buddha, Ganesh, and an ornate 4 meters Balinese door. Also, you’ll find a cleaning station homing shrimps, schools of batfish, and a lot of turtles. The garden is covered by gorgeous gorgonian fans. Diving upwards, at 15 m you will come to a reef flat with plinths and statue heads sitting in communion. The reef is full of small and weird critters, and electric clamps, and the bommies host the usual marine life, sponges, crinoids …

Temple Wall - Pura Tembok

The temple wall, also named Pura Tembok, is 10 minutes away by boat ride. It is a great dive with a magnificent selection of crustaceans. Here, the steep wall is covered with large fans, sponges, and soft coral. You might even discover the rare flame scallops in the crannies and crevices. The bottom of the wall lies between 16 to 35 meters As the dive site is relatively close to the shore, the visibility may sometimes be a bit degraded. Nonetheless, it is a fabulous site especially if you love exploring walls. It’s also a fabulous snorkeling location and an excellent night dive.

Bio wreck, Bali, indonesia

Bio Wreck - Diving Pemuteran

This site was affected years ago by cyanide fishing and the Crown of Thorn Starfish. It has been in recovery for almost 20 years now. And it’s all thanks to Australian AusAid funding. The investment allows the reef gardeners of Pemuteran to maintain and protect the site and to sink so-called bio-rock structures. Bio-Rocks are a technology developed to regenerate damaged reefs. The manmade structures are powered with low-wattage electricity to accelerate the creation of limestone formations. This, in turn, accelerates and promotes coral growth. Wow!

More than fifty-six such Bio-Rock structures have been installed since June 2000. With a total length of 300m, we find these structures in an area parallel to the shore, about 50-100 meters from the coastline, in 7 to 10 m depth. They are fairly well lined up, hence forming a natural snorkeling and diving trail. Great snorkeling, albeit the proximity to the shore can sometimes lower the visibility. It all depends on the tides and general sea conditions here.

Diving Pemuteran at Close Encounters

To get to the dive site named Close Encounter we take a 2km boat ride from the shore. Here the reef has a great mix of hard and soft corals. The fish here are typical reef fishes, including schools of snappers, large jacks, batfish, sweet lips, emperor fish, and fusiliers. Sometimes you have nice surprise visits here at Close Encounter, which is the reason for the name. We regularly see larger species of marine life, such as the eagle ray, reef sharks, tuna, and even whale sharks. To finish off our dive we visit the local coral gardens at 3-5 meters. It is in pristine condition. This is a perfect location for our safety stop. Here in particular conditions for snorkeling are also very good.

Deep Reef or Gede Reef

After a 15-minute  boat ride, you will jump into the water and descend “into the blue”. The flat top of the reef is at 13m and it’s a steep wall that reaches the bottom at 40m. Here the reef has an amazing variety of corals and invertebrates, including table corals, giant leather corals, and sponges. It hosts numerous critters of all sorts and unusually colorful nudibranchs. We can find flame scallops on the west side. Also, we often see schools of fusiliers and jacks swimming around here.

Napoleon Reef

Napoleon Reef is located about 2 kilometers offshore. The reef has a flat top which is gently sloping down with a small wall towards the South side. The slopes of the reefs are covered with an amazing variety of colorful soft coral, sea fans, giant barrels, and other sponges. We regularly see squid, cuttlefish, and rays in this area. At around 20m depth you can see the remains of a sunken diving boat, which was named “Zoe”. This site is very convenient for snorkeling and night diving.
