The largest site of Amuk Bay, diving at Gili Tepekong is always an exceptional experience. It is a small island that offers some of the most impressive diving in Bali. The strong currents coupled with superb marine life and stunning hard and soft coral make this dive site an unforgettable experience. Depending on the conditions, you can dive at various sites around the island.
Nico Dives Cool recommends this dive site for intermediate to experienced divers, as the current and dive conditions can change quickly here. We recommend you have an advanced open water certification with some good experience in current and drift diving. Why not do a course to bolster your skills if you do not have one?

From Sanur, we take one of our buses and reach the tranquil Bay of Padang Bai. Leaving the beach here in Padang Bai, we enjoy a 30 minutes ride by Jukung (comfortable local fishing boat).
Diving Gili Tepekong, you may find many fish feeding and shelter from the currents. Apart from a typical variety of coral fish. Here you can expect to see white tip reef sharks, shark nursery, turtles, cuttlefish, octopus, eagle rays, barracudas, Napoleon wrasses, trevallies, turtles, jackfish, and tunas. And if we are in the right season, you might also see the mighty Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola).
We usually dive in Gili Tepekong, Gili Mimpang, and the Tangked shark cave, which is close by, on the same day. Sometimes, entering the water in this dive site can be tricky due to the various currents. We always observe the currents before planning our dive here and jumping into the water.
Here, you can see great walls and have an amazing swim through (The Passage) a beautiful canyon. There are many caves and several huge boulders from the cliffs above which created an underwater aisle. Note that the water can be very cold as well. It can drop down to 20C. But it’s also the best moment to see the Mola Mola!
Off the Southwestern tip of Gili Tepekong, we find the famous dive site called the Canyon. Tepekong Canyon starts at around 25m deep and is lined with some large black boulders of basalt carpeted with soft and hard corals. Drifting through the canyon in clear visibility is an awesome experience. We often see sharks and other big pelagic at this top dive site. Here, huge schools of sweetlips, fusiliers, trevallies, and snappers swirl around the walls in this nutrient-rich water. On the other hand, East Gili Tepekong offers a wall down to around 40m and a coral reef at 24m with excellent marine life.
