The SSI Extended Range 40 program provides a thorough introduction to the concepts, techniques, and procedures required for decompression diving. Designed as either a stand-alone program or a stepping-stone to become an SSI Extended Range 45 diver, this program provides foundational skills that are the basis for all future technical programs.

Become an Extended Range 40 Diver

Using either a sidemount or twinset configuration, this program prepares you to plan and conduct limited decompression dives to a maximum depth of 40 meters. In addition, this advanced program will teach you the techniques and procedures for using breathing gases up to 100% oxygen for decompression.

What you learn with the SSI’s Extended Range 40 Diving Course :

– Using either a sidemount or twinset configuration, this program prepares you to plan and conduct decompression dives for a maximum of 15 minutes of accelerated decompression using up to 100% oxygen to a maximum depth of 40 meters.

– This advanced program teaches you the techniques and procedures for using breathing gases up to 100% oxygen for decompression.

– Practice more Advanced Buoyancy & Trim: achieve perfect trim and buoyancy control.

– Master Propulsion & Positioning: advanced finning techniques (frog kick, backward kick, helicopter turns) and body positioning.

– Learn how to do a team gas switch, reach valves, and switch gases instinctively without thinking.

– Learn all the emergency skills (air sharing using a long hose, bringing an unconscious diver to the surface, deco stage exchange, etc.).

– Mastery of Technical Equipment Configurations: learning to manage more than one cylinder (twinset or sidemount) and the associated redundancy. Training on how to properly rig, carry, and “switch” to a side-slung stage tank containing your decompression gas.

– Learning complex gas management (the “Rule of Thirds”) to ensure you always have enough gas for yourself and a teammate in an emergency.

– Communication: use clear underwater communication signals.

– Skill refinement: perfect your technical skills, build deep muscle memory for enhanced safety and comfort in demanding environments.

For whom is the SSI’s Extended Range 40 Diving Course for:

– Open Water and Advanced divers with enough experience, ready to transition to tech diving using a sidemount or twinset configuration, after getting their XR Sidemount Foundations or XR Twinset Foundations certification.

– Divers preparing for the Extended Range 45 Diving Course who don’t have time to complete this full course yet (possibility to do an upgrade course in 2 days to become a certified Extended Range 45 Diver). The Extended Range 40 course is often used as a stepping stone toward Extended Range 45 (Air or Trimix), which allows for deeper dives with less nitrogen narcosis.

Pre-requisites:

Must be 18 years old or above
Have a MEDICAL FORM SIGNED BY A PHYSICIAN within 12 months stating you are fit to dive
Having a personal dive insurance (mandatory)
Open Water certification, Deep diving certification, Nitrox 40% certification
XR Foundations or XR Sidemount certification
Have at least 24 logged dives

Day 1: Pool and Theory
Day 2: 2 dives in Padang Bai/ Tulamben / Amed (30 m)
Day 3 : 2 dives in Padang Bai/ Tulamben / Amed (40 m)
